Dapper Dreams: Summer Homes

Captain Dapper likes to dream big.

As of this summer, I have lived in Chicago for 16 years. I moved here from a rural community in central Ohio after a childhood spent dreaming of an urban life. From the time that I became aware that there were places like New York and Chicago, places with teeming masses of people and thriving nightlife, I just knew that was where I belonged. So as soon  as I was able, I made my way to the closest big city and immediately felt at home.

Flash forward to the present and I'm finding myself itching to get out of the city. Not permanently, mind you. I'll always be an urban boy at heart. But as I get a little older I find that I'd like to spend more time in a place where bird songs and rustling leaves are more common than sirens and car alarms.

On a recent excursion to Fennville, Michigan, I came across this abandoned old lakefront house. It was love at first sight. The weather beaten old wood siding, the broken windows, that long front porch ... everything about it appealed to me. I immediately started thinking of all the ways I could make it dapper it up. After all, an abandoned house must be available for cheap, right? Ha!

It turns out that this house is currently on the market for $1.2 million. The fact that this house has prime beach access hadn't even occurred to me. I fell in love with the house, not the location. According to the listing at Century 21, that price is for the lot - presumably the house would be a total tear down. My dreams Grey Gardens-tinged dream of moving into this house and turning it into Captain Dapper HQ has been dashed. For now.
