Throwback Thursday: Captain Dapper Circa 1994

Captain Dapper is not ashamed of his past.

As a frequent Instagram user, I'm a big fan of throwback Thursday, or, as the kids call it, #tbt. It is so fun to see that the people I follow today looked so much different yesterday. As you can see above, I'm no different.

I wasn't always the dapper chap you've come to know and (hopefully) love. Back in 1994 I was a poetry writing, cigarette smoking, flannel wearing, long haired 19-year-old. Now, before you start judging the look, let me remind you that this was the height of the grunge era. And before you start judging the habit, you should know that I haven't touched a cigarette in eight years.

Back in 1994 I fancied myself a regular Kurt Cobain. I had the shaggy multi-colored hair, the Chuck Taylor sneakers and ripped jeans and the ever present grumpy disposition. I was living in Fairborn, Ohio, which was a big step up from my very tiny hometown but still felt too small for my ambitions. In another year I would cut my hair, drop out of college and move to Columbus, Ohio in my slow transition from small town boy to big city man.

If I could go back in time and talk to this 19-year-old me I would tell him to slow down, be patient and, for Pete's sake, stop smoking cigarettes! But of course I can't do that. Not until someone invents a time machine anyway. So for now I just have to accept this previous version of myself and marvel at how far I've come.

What would you tell your 19-year-old self?
