Dapper Stuff: Ernest Alexander's Calder Work Shirt

Captain Dapper loves style, there's no doubt about that. But what I love just as much as style is quality workmanship. There will always be a special place in my heart for cheap, fast fashion but the older I get, the more I appreciate handcrafted goods. My years spent as a handbag designer definitely contribute to my love of American-made, handcrafted goods. The recent clothing factory collapse has also sent me in search of American-made fashions.

Like many things in my life these days, I first stumbled upon Ernest Alexander on Instagram. (Indeed, Instagram is becoming one of my favorite ways to discover fashion brands.) I admired the photos of the Ernest Alexander's bags for a few months but didn't follow up on it. Then, Ernest Alexanders posted this photo of their Calder Work Shirt and it was love at first sight.

First of all, I love a chambray shirt. Chambray can have a very blue collar workman feel but it can also be dressed up with a tie or bow tie for a funky casual vibe. The details on this Ernest Alexander shirt are what really make it great. From the hidden buttons on the collars to the double button top closure, it's clear that a lot of passion went into this shirt. Although a little out of my price range for a shirt, I ordered one. I may not have pulled the trigger on the purchase but the fact that the shirts are made in NYC and are offered in extra small sealed the deal.
