Dapper Style: Temporary Tattoos

As you might have gathered from my admission of design ADD in the mantel post, Captain Dapper likes to change things up ... a lot. I think it's this short attention span that has always kept me from getting a tattoo. That and my aversion to needles, pain and permanent scarification. What I do love, however, are temporary tattoos! All the fun, none of the pain. Besides, can a 37-year-old man get away with a pink cat in a bowtie and top hat on his wrist? Sure, for a week or so. But would I want that kitty on my wrinkly, liver-spotted 80-year-old wrist? Probably not?

The pink kitty came on a sheet of temporary tattoos that were being handed out at Urban Outfitters a few weeks ago. It was just quirky enough to slap on my wrist for a couple of days before it started to wear away. There were also a couple of teardrop tattoos on that set, you know, should I want to do my hardcore, ex-con Captain Dapper look.

The best place, hands down, for temporary tattoos is Tattly. Started by Tina Roth Eisenberg of SwissMiss fame, Tattly stocks an amazing array of design-y temporary tattoos from a well rounded roster of artists. The spirit of Tattly is all about the promotion of good design. To that end, the artists get a cut of the sales of their designs.

I had the pleasure of meeting Tina last year and she carried around with her a little box of tattoos, along with some sponges and little scissors. She pushed the box over to me and told me to take as many as I'd like. In addition to a little stack of adorable tattoos (including the dapper chap on my shoulder above), Tina also passed along some advice for easy temporary tattoo removal. It's simple: scotch tape. Put a piece, sticky side down, over the tattoo, rub it into your skin a bit, then pull it off. Most of the tattoo comes off right along with the tape.

  1. Tattly's temporary tattoos collection is very impressive. I've also used another temporary tattoos website called TattooSales. They too have a good variety of temporary tattoos. :-)
