Captain Dapper is reminding you to wear your summer fashions before it's too late.
It's a sunny Sunday morning. I've just showered and I'm standing in front of my wardrobe trying to decide what to wear to a friend's house for brunch. Scanning the wardrobe I'm pretty pleased with my current selection. Throughout the summer I've picked up some really fun warm weather fashions - like this great pair of leather sandals that I scored at a DSW in Connecticut. And then there were those white jeans I carefully selected earlier in the season. As I was standing there, feeling like summer would never end, The Mister groaned about his school year starting tomorrow. Oh, that's right. Summer's almost over. Labor Day is around the corner and then it's a quick slip and slide into autumn.
And that's when I realized it. I have to get maximum wear out of all my summer clothes over the next
While I think that some fashion rules have changed over the years, I still subscribe to the "no white after Labor Day" rule. And unless I'm going to the beach, I tend to set the sandals and gingham aside until next year as well. The same goes for the tank tops and straw hats. As far as I'm concerned, all of those things belong to summer, those magical months between Memorial Day and Labor Day when you can take a more relaxed (yet still dapper!) approach to dressing.
Yeah, it's kind of old fashioned, my fixation on seasonal clothes. That's just how it goes when you're Captain Dapper. So over the course of the next week, I'm going to wear the hell out of my white pants. I hope I don't have to do much walking because those cute brown leather sandals will be a permanent part of my wardrobe this week. And then that's it. They'll go in the little plastic bin where I keep my off season clothes. In their place in my wardrobe will be the light sweaters and long sleeve shirts that have been packed away.

Of course, just because Labor Day rolls around that doesn't mean that the weather suddenly cools. Chicago still experiences plenty of hot, summery days well into September, and sometimes even into October. You may still see me in denim shorts and t-shirts during this transitional time, but the white pants and sandals will be packed away.
One interesting side effect of my clothes rotation: I've had the red gingham shirt in the photo above for four years. Every spring, as I pull it out of the box, along with all of my other summer clothes, I get excited to see it all over again. It's like my own personal way of saying, Yes, summer has officially arrived.
