Layering Essentials: 9 Best Down & Puffer Vests for 2013

As you might have gathered from the denim jacket layering guide I put together for ManMade last week, I'm a big fan of layered looks. And nothing works better as a top layer than the classic down vest. Some fall mornings can start out quite chilly and then, by afternoon, turn warm and sunny. That's where the puffer vest comes in. Whether you're layering a vest over a blazer, denim jacket or sweater, it's a perfect way to add a warm topper for the fall season. I have a vintage down vest that's seen better days, so I'm on the hunt for a replacement this year. These nine down vests are the best I've found this year.

This AE Quilted Field Vest from American Eagle has a classic British hunter vibe. You could slip this vest over a tweed blazer for a little Prince William on a hunting trip realness. ($69.95)

Speaking of rugged but dapper hunter, this Hacking Vest from Club Monaco is another great rustic look. This olive color would pair well with a denim jacket or other blue outerwear. It's available in three additional colors.  ($149)

When you want to add a little pattern to your fall look, this Elmer Reversible Vest from Dogfunk is a great pick. And, for those days when you're not quite ready to rock plaid, this vest is reversible. Flip it inside out and you'll have a basic navy blue vest that will pair with just about anything. ($97.97)

I love the classic styling of this 1936 Skyliner Model Hunting Down Vest from Eddie Bauer. I could see Cary Grant wearing this vest on a day off from filming. You know, on one of those days when he and Randolph Scott went off for one of their "boys" weekends. ($199)

The subtle pinstripe on this Special Edition Quilt Again Vest from Patagonia dresses it up a bit. The vest is made from a reclaimed wool blend, which is made from wool scraps from the cutting room floor. Pair this vest with a blazer or a big sweater for a dressy-casual look. ($199)

The Broadmoor Quilted Vest from J.Crew is a little lighter weight than some of the others featured on this list. That makes it perfect for those warmer autumn days. Since it's has a thinner profile, it's also a great option for the guy who doesn't want to add extra bulk. ($138)

The aptly named Redford Vest from Ralph Lauren has a definite western vibe. With the leather yoke and fur collar, this vest says ride 'em cowboy! Ride 'em all the way back to the 1970's! ($690)

For the sporty sort, the Mountain Hardwear Nitrous Down Vest from REI is a classic. Whether you're cross country skiing or elbowing your ways through the subway station, this vest says I'm fit and I know it. ($160)

Here's a more budget friendly version of the 1970's inspired vest. Like the RL vest above, this Windfall Mixed Gilet from French Connection has a western vibe, but without the fur collar. $59.99
